old barrels, bottled at 100 proof. Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey
Named after Nathan Nearest Green, the former slave whos credited with teaching
Jack Daniels how to distill. For most of Jack Daniels 150 year history, popular
lore held that the brands namesake was an orphan who learned how to distill
whiskey at the foot of a preacher whod taken him in ” guy by the name of Dan
Call. The popular lore, it turns out, was poppycock. Thanks in large part to
dogged research by author Fawn Weaver, we now know that the man who actually
taught a teenaged Jack Daniel how to coax precious hooch from a still was
Nathan Nearest Green. He was a slave, which goes a long way towards explaining
why his story was lost in time. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in
1865, and a year later, Jack Daniel opened his eponymous distillery. He hired
Nearest Green as his distiller, and the rest is history.Nearest hailed from
Maryland, where he presumably learned the ins and outs of distillation. Its
unclear when he arrived in Lynchburg, Tennessee, but what can be confirmed is
that he is the first African-American master distiller on record in the United
States. And now, the name of one of the most influential distillers the world
never knew is finally where it rightfully belongs, emblazoned on a bottle of
whiskey. The Premium Aged whiskey is a light caramel-colored whiskey that smells
of dried grass, peaches and maple syrup. Its made to appeal to those who enjoy
whiskey on the sweeter side. But dont let that oatmeal raisin cookie flavor
fool you”at 100 proof, this confectionery treat packs a wallop. Best served over
a little ice, or in a cocktail with lemon juice and honey.
Every batch of Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey is
hand-selected by our founders and curated by fifth-generation Master Blender,
Victoria Eady Butler, who’s signature is on the back of each bottle. Aged a
minimum of 7 years, and bottled at 93-proof, this is a smooth sipping
whiskey. Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey Uncle Nearest Premium
Whiskey is inspired by the best whiskey-maker the world never knew, the first
African-American master distiller on record in the United States, Nathan
Nearest Green. A slave until Emancipation and the end of the Civil War, Green
was likely the one who taught Jack Daniel how to distill. The new release is
age-stated at 7 years and bottled at a light-bodied 93 proof, and is distilled,
aged, and bottled in Tennessee. The 1884 name of the Small Batch expression
commemorates the last year Nearest barreled his own distillate before retiring
from distilling. Each batch of 1884 Small Batch is being curated by a different
descendant of Uncle Nearest. The first batch to hit shelves is specially chosen
by Greens great-great-grandaughter, Victoria Eady-Butler. If my
great-great-grandfather were alive today, I know how proud he would be to see
us keeping his legacy alive through the continued growth of this brand, said
Eady-Butler in a press release. When Fawn first agreed to shine a light on our
ancestor by putting his name on a bottle, we never could have imagined where
Uncle Nearest would be two years later, with people around the world knowing the
name Nearest Green. I speak for our entire family when I say were thrilled to
be a part of his legacy, added Eady-Butler. We set out to cement Nearests
legacy and to ensure his contributions to the Tennessee Whiskey industry would
never again be forgotten, said Fawn Weaver in a press release. With every
bottle containing the signature of the descendant who created it, Nearests
family is picking up where he left off.
