Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Whiskey Only one out of every hundred barrels of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey is chosen to become Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select. To craft Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Tennessee Whiskey, master distiller Jeff Arnett of Lynchburg, TN first selects one out of every hundred barrels for its unique and expressive qualities. Once these special casks have been identified, they are moved to the very top of the the distillery's rickhouses, where extreme temperature changes facilitate dramatic interactions between the whiskey and the wood by law, Tennessee whiskey must be aged new new, charred American oak barrels). Finally, each barrel is bottled individually at 94 proof, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind flavors in every bottle. Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Tennessee Whiskey has a cherry wood color and classic aroma of vanilla, caramel, brown sugar and even some cinnamon. On the palate, notes of oak and charcoal become evident, along with sweeter touches of orange peel and honey. The finish is sweet and spicy, with flavors of butterscotch and clove lingering on the tongue. Each bottle of Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Tennessee Whiskey is hand-numbered, including the exact barrel number from which it was drawn. Jack Daniels Barrel Proof Single Barrel Whiskey the straight from the barrel experience means that it comes without dilution and at variable strength, starting at 125 proof and going all the way up to a scorching 140 proof. By comparison, standard Jack Daniel's black label comes in at 80 proof and the regular Single Barrel strength is set at 94.Jack Daniels has never released a barrel strength whiskey. That's changing, with the release of Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof, the company's first-ever cask strength offering. The whiskey is not a terribly complicated idea: Take the JD Single Barrel Select and don't water it down. Single Barrel is a consistent 94 proof, but these are bottled at whatever the cask gives you, ranging from 125 to 140 proof, depending on the bottle you get. To us this is the purest, most authentic expression of Jack Daniel's Tennessee whiskey you could offer straight out of the barrel and into the bottle," says assistant master distiller Christopher Fletcher, who was involved in its creation from start to finish. He adds that the product had been in the works for a while and when the market became "as good as it's been in decades," the decision was made that the timing was right. "I wish we'd done it a little while back," he chuckles. Fletcher, the grandson of Frank Bobo, a former Jack Daniel's master distiller, casts the release in terms of whiskey purity in the face of what he calls some "outlandish offerings" from other distillers in the interest of enlarging their portfolios. "It's the simplification of being able to sample, to literally sample, a barrel and not only have it be a barrel-strength product, but also a true single-barrel product with each barrel providing a different experience from proof-content to flavor-content as well. Cask strength typically reflects more than just more alcohol. In the straight whiskey world, more proof usually means more flavor and it certainly proves true with this dram. It's a big, brash whiskey that goes on an adventuresome palate safari that includes wood, vanilla, fruits, spices, nuts and chocolate. The Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof has also been only minimally filtered after aging to retain flavor. "Just taking out the sticks and stones," Fletcher describes it. This is an interesting revelation, since all Jack Daniel's is famously charcoal-filtered before it goes into the barrel. In fact, this is part of the definition of Tennessee sour mash whiskey. Gentleman Jack, another Jack Daniel's product, is distinguished by being charcoal-filtered both before and after maturation. Fans who expect the signature smoothness of other Jack Daniel's expressions will be surprised by the grip that the latest product offers. Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye our first new grain bill since Prohibition. This historic creation marries the smoothness of Jack Daniels with a unique 70% rye grain bill. Complex flavors of ripe fruit mingle with light toasted oak notes to create a taste rich with spice and a pleasant lingering finish. This is a big, bold rye that does not overpower. Jack Daniels created their first new grain bill in 100 years for the creation of their rye whiskey. The Single Barrel Rye is the company's third rye release. They started with Unaged Rye in 2012, followed by Rested Rye in 2014. According to the company, the whiskey uses the same cave spring water from the Jack Daniels Hollow and proprietary yeast that's been used in the distillery's 150-year-old Tennessee Whiskey recipe. The whiskey is aged in the upper regions of their barrel house where its exposed to the increased temperature variation. The Single Barrel Rye is at least 4 years old based on the lack of age statement on its label, although the company has not officially called it as such.
